NFL Insider Predicts Desperation Fuels Matthew Stafford Trade To Struggling Team

A recent report indicates that the New York Giants are considering a quarterback strategy for 2025 that involves pairing a veteran with a rookie to support Tommy DeVito on the roster. While the free-agent quarterback class this year isn’t particularly strong (especially if Sam Darnold is franchise-tagged), the possibility of a Matthew Stafford trade continues to circulate. The Giants have been linked to Stafford in trade rumors, and ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan reports that their interest in the veteran quarterback predates last year’s trade deadline.

The Giants find themselves in a desperate situation. Brian Daboll is now on the hot seat after starting his head coaching career with much fanfare. Despite compiling a strong group of starters, the team hasn’t put together a winning season since Daboll’s first year.

It is hard not to recognize that the team hasn’t had a proven winner under center in that time. Could that be the missing piece for the Giants? The Athletic’s Chris Branch believes they think that with his latest Matthew Stafford trade prediction:

It’s still hard to imagine Stafford on a new team this year, but there appears to be dissent between player and team over his future in Los Angeles. Stafford wants a nice new deal; the Rams are worried about his durability. All I know is Stafford balled out in the playoffs. He could be traded.

  • Prediction: The Giants forgo a QB of the future in this draft and instead trade for Stafford because the current regime needs wins pronto.

Stafford has set his price at $50 million. The Los Angeles Rams have set their trade value at a first-round pick. The Giants have a very inciting first-round pick to offer — with the third overall pick.

While they currently only have $38.7 million in effective cap space, NFL contracts can have plenty of wiggle room built in.

Furthermore, desperation is a bad decision accelerant that can turn rational people into poor negotiators. Just ask Nico Harrison — who was the architect of the trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for pennies on the dollar.
