NFC Team Interested In Matthew Stafford Trade Since Before 2024 Deadline

The biggest story heading into the NFL Combine is what the Los Angeles Rams and Matthew Stafford will decide to do with one another – a decision that may find a resolution in the next few days.

A recent report indicates that the New York Giants are considering a quarterback strategy for 2025 that involves pairing a veteran with a rookie to support Tommy DeVito on the roster. While the free-agent quarterback class this year isn’t particularly strong (especially if Sam Darnold is franchise-tagged), the possibility of a Stafford trade continues to circulate. The Giants have been linked to Stafford in trade rumors, and ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan reports that their interest in the veteran quarterback predates last year’s trade deadline.

According to Raanan, the Giants inquired about Stafford’s availability prior to last year’s trade deadline. The Rams, who struggled early in the season with a 1-4 start exacerbated by injuries, also received inquiries regarding Cooper Kupp. At that juncture, a Giants-Stafford partnership would have seemed incongruous, given the Giants’ own struggles. However, the current contract dispute between Stafford and the Rams has reignited speculation and once again linked the two parties.

While Kupp’s future with the Rams beyond 2024 appears unlikely, the team reportedly intends to retain Matthew Stafford. However, Stafford is seeking a more substantial contract, aiming to join the growing number of quarterbacks earning $50 million or more annually. Although his talent and past performance arguably justify such compensation, the Rams may be hesitant to commit to that level for a player entering his age-37 season. Notably, no quarterback currently holding a contract of that magnitude is older than 31.

The Rams are facing a rapidly approaching deadline to resolve their situation with Stafford, who has been granted permission to explore options with other teams. For the Giants, acquiring Stafford would provide a stable and experienced starting quarterback, likely influencing their draft strategy. It’s plausible that they would opt to bypass this year’s less-than-stellar quarterback draft class and instead concentrate on strengthening the overall roster to support the 16-year veteran.
