Matthew Stafford To Giants Rumor Picking Up Steam, Insider Predicts Trade Proposal

The idea of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford being traded seemed like a far-out joke, especially to a team like the New York Giants. But now, that idea is really picking up steam, and it actually seems to have some legs.

Fox Sports personality and insider Colin Cowherd has now jumped into the conversation, and based on what he has heard, the rumor of Matthew Stafford to the Giants is very real.

“The Rams like Matt Stafford but they are tiring of the constant quarterback talk, his wife saying things publically, they’re not real happy with Cooper Kupp going public with something they tried to keep quiet. Their kind of over Cooper Kupp, and with that, a little bit, Matt Stafford. They like him, but they don’t want to restructure his deal and give him a big contract.”

Colin Cowherd is a pretty connected guy, and happens to live here in Los Angeles and runs in all the circles with the pro teams. He wouldn’t just make something up.

While the Rams would love to run it back with Matthew Stafford and have him retire in LA, this is kind of the first time we have heard that there is legit “distaste” between both sides.

He goes on to say, “What the Rams want, I’m told, is the Giants first-round pick at number 3….They want to take that pick, move down, and get more picks. Why? So they have extra picks for next year when they have to move up to get a quarterback. So what the Rams will be in the market for, if Matt Stafford moves, is a 1 to 2-year rental at quarterback.”

Again, it will take a lot to make this happen, and we are still far from this point, but the 3rd overall pick is certainly enticing, and would be a great return for a 37-year-old QB with a bloated cap hit.

So who could the Rams target as that 1 to 2-year bridge QB? Cowherd gives his suggestion.

Cowherd suggests that the Rams could sign Aaron Rodgers for cheap, and get good QB play while they prepare to draft their next franchise QB.

“Aaron Rodgers. Hear me out. Aaron needs a rehab…He’s got a house in Malibu. West Coast guy…Aaron Rodgers’ last 10 games last year, he was good. And remember, that was with a third-tier coaching staff…I believe Aaron is craving infrastructure, stability, a coach he respects, and organizational excellence.”

“The Matt Stafford to the Giants is real, I’m told.”

Well, this just made the offseason even more interesting than it already was. As crazy as this idea sounds, it would actually be a really smart move for the Rams, especially in building for the future.

I still think running it back next year with Matthew Stafford would be the best decision, primarily for locker-room cohesion. However, in terms of play on the field, it would not be a huge dropoff going from Stafford to Rodgers.

With how bad the Jets were last year, Rodgers had more passing yards and more touchdowns than Stafford.

It’s still crazy to think about Matthew Stafford in another uniform, but reading all the tea leaves, it appears to be more of a reality than everyone originally thought.
