Los Angeles Rams May Already Have Their Top Stafford Replacement In Mind, Insider Reveals Surprise Choice

The future of Matthew Stafford with the Los Angeles Rams remains uncertain, prompting speculation about potential successors. According to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic, head coach Sean McVay holds a strong affinity for backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, praising his “amiability, work ethic, and understanding of the offense.”

Rodrigue suggests that Garoppolo could serve as a valuable “bridge” Rams QB providing a temporary solution while the team identifies and develops its next franchise signal-caller.

While the Rams have expressed a strong interest in retaining Stafford, as reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, a restructured contract remains a significant hurdle. Fowler also acknowledged that Stafford possesses a “strong trade market” should the two parties fail to reach an agreement on a new deal.

Stafford has a $49.7 million cap hit for the 2025 season and a $53.7 million cap hit in 2026, via Spotrac.

As for Garoppolo, he signed a one-year deal with Los Angeles as a free agent in 2024 and spent the ensuing season as a depth option. His only Rams start came in Week 18 when McVay typically rests starters when heading into the playoffs. Garoppolo completed 27 of 41 passing attempts for 334 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in a 25-30 losing effort to the Seattle Seahawks.

Despite lacking Pro Bowl accolades, Garoppolo has demonstrated the ability to lead a team to playoff success, boasting a 43-21 record as a starting quarterback in 64 career starts.

According to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic, head coach Sean McVay exhibits a preference for veteran leadership at the quarterback position. This preference likely stems from McVay’s desire to maintain the team’s competitive trajectory, particularly considering the Rams’ recent history of playoff appearances, including their Super Bowl LVI triumph. McVay may harbor concerns about the immediate impact of a rookie quarterback on a team accustomed to contending for championships.

Therefore, if the Rams decide to explore trade options for Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo could emerge as a viable and attractive replacement option for McVay.
