The Las Vegas Raiders are undergoing a significant transformation under the leadership of new head coach Pete Carroll. The team has been actively reshaping its roster, which was highlighted by the acquisition of quarterback Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks. Now, they continue to build through NFL free agency, adding veteran linebacker Elandon Roberts to their defensive unit.
Las Vegas Raiders Sign Elandon Roberts For $3 Million
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Raiders have secured Roberts on a one-year, $3 million contract, negotiated by Drew Rosenhaus. Roberts, a former sixth-round draft pick, has carved out a solid NFL career, beginning with four seasons in New England, followed by three in Miami, and two in Pittsburgh. Known for his reliability as an off-ball linebacker, Roberts had his most productive seasons in 2022 and 2023, surpassing 100 total tackles and recording two sacks in each year. While his role in Pittsburgh’s defense diminished in 2024, he still participated in all 17 regular-season games. His addition is expected to mitigate the losses of Robert Spillane to the Patriots and Divine Deablo to the Falcons.
The Raiders have also retained defensive end Malcolm Koonce on a one-year, $12 million contract. Koonce, who had a breakout season in 2023 with 43 total tackles and eight sacks playing alongside Maxx Crosby, unfortunately, missed the entire 2024 season due to a knee injury. His one-year deal serves as a “prove-it” contract, offering him an opportunity to secure a more substantial payday in 2026.
Furthermore, they have added safety Jeremy Chinn on a two-year, $16 million deal. Chinn, a versatile playmaker capable of playing multiple roles in the secondary, had a career-best season in 2024 with the Commanders, recording 104 total tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, two interceptions, and 10 passes defended. Chinn’s arrival helps offset the departure of Tre’Von Moehrig, who signed a $51 million contract with the Panthers, a price the Raiders were likely unwilling to match. Raiders fans should anticipate further roster adjustments as the week progresses.
