Las Vegas Raiders Re-signing Valuable Defensive Line Stalwart

The Las Vegas Raiders have continued to reinforce their defensive line, making their second significant move in that area this week. This follows their recent agreement with Maxx Crosby on a substantial $106.5 million contract extension. Their latest acquisition in NFL free agency is defensive tackle Adam Butler.

The Raiders’ new leadership, led by general manager John Spytek and head coach Pete Carroll, is bringing Butler back to the team. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Raiders have signed Butler to a three-year, $16.5 million contract, which includes $11 million in guaranteed money. This move comes as teams prepare for the legal tampering period, which begins across the league on Monday.

This move signifies that the collaboration between John Spytek and Pete Carroll is focused on retaining the core of the Raiders’ defensive line. They are securing the services of two pivotal players: Crosby, the consistent Pro Bowl pass rusher on the edge, and now Butler, who is coming off a season of career-best performance.

The 30-year-old Butler recently achieved career highs, recording 65 total tackles, including 36 solo tackles. Furthermore, he has demonstrated consistent pass-rushing ability, achieving five sacks in each of the past two seasons. He also played a career-high 858 snaps, most of any defensive lineman on the team.

KTNV senior sports reporter Nick Walters expressed enthusiastic approval of the signing, highlighting the strategic move to bolster the Raiders’ defensive line. Walters’ excitement extended to envisioning the 2025 Raiders defense, which will once again feature the imposing presence of Adam Butler inside, a player who stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 300 pounds.

“Scary D-Line: Big move for the Raiders bringing DT Adam Butler back to pair with Christian Wilkins on the interior while Maxx Crosby, Tyree Wilson, and possibly Malcolm Koonce man the edge,” Walters posted. “Plus, Tom Brady has a strong history involving Butlers and Pete Carroll…”

The Raiders are demonstrating a commitment to both continuity and change. While they’ve solidified their defensive line with the retention of Maxx Crosby and Adam Butler, their strategic moves extend beyond the trenches. On Friday, the team executed an assertive trade, acquiring Geno Smith, a former Pro Bowl quarterback, from the Seattle Seahawks.

This acquisition of Smith represents the Raiders’ first significant offensive maneuver of the offseason. The team is now poised to enter a new era, featuring a new signal-caller alongside familiar veteran leadership, as they shape their 2025 roster in Las Vegas.
