The Chargers Need a Competent Backup Quarterback, Should They Trade for Former Raven Or Sign a Veteran?

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was diagnosed with what is normally a finicky and nagging injury, plantar fasciitis. This put a spotlight on Easton Stick for the team’s first preseason game. Stick’s performance was terrible, ending his day with the second-worst quarterback rating from the week’s games, 14.6

It isn’t outside the realm of possibility that the Chargers will be forced to play a quarterback not named Herbert at some point this season and it is evident that it is time for a change.

Chargers Options for a New Backup QB

Trade For Tyler Huntley

The Chargers have not been shy about building the Baltimore Ravens on the West Coast. Tyler Huntley, now with the Browns, backed up Lamar Jackson for four seasons in Baltimore and has experience in the Greg Roman offense.

The last two Roman offenses have also featured highly mobile quarterbacks, which Huntley is. In his nine games, he has starter, Huntley completed 64 percent of his passes, throwing for just under 2000 yards, with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also tacked on over 500 yards on the ground.

The Browns have a stacked QB room, with Jameis Winston, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and Huntley. It’s unlikely they will want to hang on to all three backups.

Sign Ryan Tannehill

It isn’t the sexiest choice, but it would be hard to find an option with as much game experience as Ryan Tannehill. His last few seasons haven’t been his best, but, even at his worst, he has never posted a QB rating even close to what Stick posted on Saturday.

Tannehill has started 151 games over his 11 seasons in the league, winning 81 of those contests. One of his career’s best seasons came just four years ago. In 2020, he threw for 3816 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
