In his first season as the UCLA Bruins head coach, DeShaun Foster faced significant challenges, from a grueling schedule to injuries and roster adjustments.
While the Bruins finished 5-7, Saturday’s 20-13 win over Fresno State at the Rose Bowl showcased the foundation Foster is building for the program’s future.
“This game went very similar to how our season went,” Foster said. “We had a few ups and downs, but my guys are very resilient. They have continued to play hard. They do not let things affect them.”
Foster’s approach to adversity emphasized resilience and accountability. Despite a schedule that included top programs like LSU, Oregon, and Penn State, the Bruins remained competitive and finished the season with a hard-fought win. Foster credited the team’s effort for keeping the program on track.
“I never wanted to complain about our schedule, who we had to play, or why we are playing this team,” Foster said. “We just knew we had to play.”

The season saw standout performances from players like quarterback Ethan Garbers, tight end Moliki Matavao, and linebacker Carson Schwesinger.
Foster’s emphasis on preparation and effort paid off in key moments, such as the Bruins’ dominant second-half performance against Fresno State. The defense held the Bulldogs to just three points in the final two quarters, while the offense delivered two touchdown drives.
Looking ahead, Foster is focused on using the offseason to strengthen the roster and build momentum. “We would love to be in a bowl game, but it is unfortunate that we came up a game short,” he said. “When they come back, they will be eager to get going. I am looking forward to this offseason.”
Foster’s first year established the framework for a program built on discipline, respect, and enthusiasm. As UCLA turns its attention to recruiting and development, the lessons of this season will guide the Bruins toward a more competitive future.
