UCLA Bruins running back TJ Harden has decided to enter the transfer portal. Harden, a former standout at Inglewood High School, had a solid sophomore season in 2023, rushing for 827 yards on 5.3 yards per carry. However, his junior season was marred by a struggling offensive line, which hindered his production.
UCLA Bruins To Lose TJ Harden To Transfer Portal
Despite these struggles and a 20 percent reduction in rushing attempts, Harden was able to lead the team with 874 yards from scrimmage with 124 carries for 506 yards and another 40 catches for 368 yards. He was the team’s second-leading pass catcher in addition to leading in rushing.
Harden’s standout performance came in the 20-17 victory over Iowa, where he rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. He also had a strong game against UCLA rival USC, rushing for 98 yards on 14 carries.
Harden’s most impressive performances came in the second half of the season. He significantly increased his production, particularly in the final four games, where he rushed for 279 yards compared to 226 yards in the first eight games.
Harden’s departure leaves UCLA’s running back room thin. With Keegan Jones graduating, Jalen Berger recovering from injury, and Anthony Frias as the only other experienced back, the Bruins will need to address this position through the transfer portal or incoming recruiting class.
It was also announced that the Bruins will also lose Justyn Martin, who plans to enter the Transfer Portal. The 6’4″, 225-pound QB went 20 for 30 for 167 Yards and 1 touchdown against Penn State this season.
The NCAA transfer portal will officially open on December 9, 2024. In the previous transfer cycle, over 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered the portal.
