UCLA Bruins Are Dead Last In The Big Ten In One Key Metric – And It Isn’t Close

The UCLA Bruins 34-17 loss to LSU exposed major deficiencies in their ground game, where the Bruins had just 14 total rushing yards.

Through three games, UCLA’s lead back, TJ Harden, has been limited to 72 yards on 28 carries, while Keegan Jones has contributed 47 yards on 9 attempts.

UCLA ranks dead last in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game with a paltry 60.3. Minnesota, the 2nd worst rushing team, almost doubles UCLA with 117.3 rushing yards per game.

The lack of production has left the Bruins’ offense one-dimensional, putting too much pressure on quarterback Ethan Garbers and the passing game.

UCLA’s offensive line has been consistently overwhelmed, both in run blocking and in pass protection. Garbers has often been forced to scramble or make quick decisions under pressure, preventing the offense from finding its rhythm. The offensive line’s inability to open running lanes has stifled the Bruins’ attempts to balance their attack, which has been crucial in their struggles to sustain drives and stay competitive.

In their game against LSU, the UCLA Bruins’ offensive line was outmatched, allowing the Tigers to dominate the line of scrimmage. This resulted in UCLA’s backs being hit at or behind the line on several attempts, negating any chance of establishing a rhythm.

If this trend continues, Oregon’s defensive front, which has been decent against the run, could feast on the Bruins’ vulnerabilities.

Exploiting Oregon’s Defensive Lapses

While Oregon’s defense has been strong overall, they have shown some susceptibility to opposing running backs. In their early matchups this season, the Ducks allowed 192 rushing yards to Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty and 57 yards to Oregon State’s Anthony Hankerson. This suggests that Oregon’s defense isn’t invincible.

To take advantage of these openings, UCLA must focus on getting Harden and Jones more involved early.

They’ve been creative with getting the ball into their back’s hands with TJ Harden having 12 receptions for 84 yards and Keegan Jones with 5 receptions for 60 yards.

Oregon enters the game with one of the most explosive offenses in the country, and UCLA cannot afford to let them dictate the pace of the game. The Bruins’ best chance to keep the Ducks’ offense in check is by controlling the clock with long, sustained drives, which can only happen if the running game is effective. Establishing the run will not only help the UCLA Bruins maintain possession but also give their defense much-needed rest between series.

If UCLA continues to struggle on the ground, Oregon’s defense will focus on shutting down Garbers in the passing game. A committed effort to improve the run game will be necessary to keep the offense balanced and prevent Oregon from loading the box or blitzing on passing downs.

The matchup against Oregon represents a turning point for UCLA. With the season at risk of spiraling after a tough loss to LSU, the Bruins must fix their rushing woes if they hope to stay competitive in the Big Ten. Success on the ground will not only alleviate pressure on Garbers but also give UCLA a fighting chance to keep pace with Oregon’s explosive offense.
