The Dive: HHH vs. Undertaker Was Exactly What It Needed To Be

Undertaker HHH WrestleMania 28

If you expected anything else from the Triple H-Undertaker match from Super Show-Down Saturday morning, then I’m sorry.

It was everything it needed to be, and then some, when “The Game” and “The Deadman” went at it for the “last time ever” in Melbourne, Australia. It was like a “greatest hits” match, doing all the moves and spots we’ve come to know and love from the two.

There was the part where the two fought out into the crowd, a nod to their WrestleMania 17 match. Undertaker choking Triple H with a cord was some Attitude Era-type stuff rarely seen in WWE these days, so that was cool to see.

Then there was the spot where Taker had HHH in the Hell’s Gate submission, with Hunter holding the sledgehammer in his hand. This was an homage to their WrestleMania 27 match, as this is how Undertaker won to improve to 19-0. Only this time around, HHH was able to escape by using the sledgehammer to choke Undertaker.

The final sequence of Saturday’s match also looked eerily similar to the greatest near-fall in WWE history. It was in their “End of an Era” match at WrestleMania 28 where Shawn Michaels, the special guest referee in the match, hit Undertaker with Sweet Chin Music. Taker fell right into the arms of HHH, who hit The Pedigree and end the streak. Somehow, though, Undertaker kicked out and the match continued. Be honest with yourself: you popped when that happened.

That’s why it was poetic when Michaels once again hit Sweet Chin Music on the Undertaker, falling right into HHH’s Pedigree. Instead of Taker kicking out, though, Triple H got the 1-2-3 and the victory in a highly entertaining match.

Look, I wasn’t the biggest fan in the world of this match happening to begin with. I wish WWE would move on from all the 1990s nostalgia and move on to promoting the current male and female superstars on the roster.

That being said, I thought HHH and Undertaker did exactly what they needed to do at Super Show-Down. They didn’t try to do much technical wrestling, instead focusing on hitting each other with steel chairs, tables, and sledgehammers. Both Kane and Michaels served their roles well also, causing enough chaos on the outside.

What happened after the match sets up a tag team match between The Brothers of Destruction and DX, which is “eh” to me. It feels like a money-grab from WWE, and I’m not really sure how many true wrestling fans want to see four men, whose combined age is 206, wrestle again.

It would also mean that Michaels would un-retire, which a lot of wrestling fans don’t want to see. The way he went out at WrestleMania 26 was perfect. To see him come back would make that moment not as whole, like seeing Ric Flair wrestling in TNA after WrestleMania 24.

You can over-analyze the HHH-Undertaker match, but at the end of the day, I found myself entertained by the end of it. That’s all I was asking for going in, and that’s what I got by the end of it.
