Don’t look now, but Survivor Series is this Sunday. Let that sink in for a second…
One of WWE’s “big four” pay-per-views has been relegated to obscurity this year as WWE ran the PPV events “Evolution” and “Crown Jewel” in a five-day span two weeks ago. This has left the Survivor Series lacking some juice – and hype.
With that being said, there are still some fine matches on the card. The brand split – which has been good and bad – has produced some fun crossover matches for the show in the past two years. This year is no different, as we have some heavy-hitting match-ups across the board.
The Universal Champion, Brock Lesnar, is set for a rematch against WWE Champion AJ Styles. These two had an awesome encounter at the show last year, and I can’t wait to see what these two men do for an encore in 2018.
The women’s match between Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey and SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch has received the most hype on TV, and rightfully so. Both Rousey and Lynch have cut vicious promos on each other and has even generated talk amongst WWE fans that it should main event the show. It’s highly unlikely it will, but this one will be a barn-burner for sure.
Another sneaky good match is Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins vs. United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura. Almost an afterthought given Rollins’ current feud with Dean Ambrose, this match has all the makings to be a lot of fun. Nakamura’s run with the U.S. title has been disappointing, but he’s still one of the best in-ring performers in WWE. Rollins has probably been the MVP of WWE in 2018 so far, so expect these two to put on a fast-paced match.
While these three matches are all expected to be great, there’s one match that I want to really focus on. One that I think can truly steal the show on Sunday.
The new Raw Tag Team Champions, the Authors of Pain (Akam and Rezar w/Drake Maverick), take on the SmackDown Tag Team Champions, The Bar (Sheamus and Cesaro w/The Big Show).
A few things pop to mind when I see this match on the card:
- That’s a lot of beef in that ring
- There better be at least one Cesaro swing
- I hope Big Show and Drake Maverick somehow get involved with each other
This match, to me, has the ability to be a classic. It may not be a technical masterpiece, but it has the chance to be one of the most physical matches in WWE history.
It’s also a great way to showcase the young talent, as a win for AOP would be huge for their credibility. They’ve been built as monsters on Raw, and getting a win over five-time tag champs would help build that aura around them.
Survivor Series 2018 may be low on hype, but the potential for a great show is high with the matches that have already been announced.
