USC Trojans Rumored To Be On Verge Of Filling Coaching Vacancy

Last week the USC Trojans announced that they would move their 2024 tight ends coach Zach Hanson to a new role — offensive line coach.

The Trojans are rumored to have narrowed their search for Henson’s replacement. The latest rumor has Joshua Eargle, who announced this departure from Florida International University on December 13th, as the current front-runner to take over as tight ends coach.

For the last two seasons, Eargle worked as FIU’s offensive line coach. In 2022, he was their tight ends coach. Before that, he spent two seasons with the Kansas Jayhawks as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator and was Austin Peay’s offensive coordinator. He got his start in coaching at Southern Mississippi as a graduate assistant in 2003.

With Eargle at OC, the Austin Peay Governors shattered offensive records in 202. The team amassed 419 yards per game, scored 340 points, and tallied 47 touchdowns, all of which surpassed previous school records. Their offensive potency was evident in their impressive 6.19 yards per play and 5.39 yards per rush, ranking them 16th and 17th nationally, respectively. Furthermore, the Governors excelled in the passing game, ranking 13th nationally in passing yards per completion (15.1). He also served as interim head coach in 2018 following the departure of Will Healy.

He was also the acting head coach for Kansas in 2020. In 2021, his recruiting class ranked fourth best in the Big 12.

With the USC Trojans, he will look to maximize tight end Lake McRee, who caught 24 passes for 245 yards last season. His contributions in the recruiting space will also benefit USC greatly.
